Some artists work best in collaboration with others who can give their work the perspective it needs. Ejecta is a project of Neon Indian’s Leanne Macomber and Tigercity’s Joel Ford. Having met on tour several years previous, the duo discovered they could make music together after Ford successfully reworked Macomber’s song “Silver” from a stack of her primitive demos. Ford’s way around a recording studio made him the perfect foil for a ghostly singer who wasn’t benefiting from her lo-fi beginnings. Ford handed her the music for “It’s Only Love,” and Macomber found the words to say what the notes were thinking. For two years, they compiled the works for this debut album, released on Ford's and coconspirator Patrick McDermott’s label Driftless Recordings. The album has a springlike tone, an ethereal sense of sounds opening up. “Mistress,” “Afraid of the Dark,” “Jeremiah,” and parts of “Small Town Girl” reach points of fleeting rapid-heartbeat satisfaction, and the remaining moments aim to replicate a slow-moving universe where there’s nothing but time to reflect on the sublime surroundings.
