End of Disclosure

With its 12th studio album, the Swedish death metal trio Hypocrisy cements its stature as one of the most melodic bands of its ilk. Here, the band opens with the grandiose title track, which is so overflowing with multilayered guitar parts that moments resonate like an orchestra. Reidar Horghagen’s drumming never attempts to upstage his bandmates, and this lets the many different screams of founding frontman Peter Tägtgren really shine. “Tales of Thy Spineless” follows with a more relentless attack. Horghagen plays drums with the breakneck speed of a demonic tantrum—Tägtgren really has his work cut out for him here as a singer and guitarist. Thankfully, this song features six-string assistance from guest musician Jonas Kjellgren (Scar Symmetry, Carnal Forge, Centinex). Tägtgren pitches down his vocal approach to croak out deeper, guttural bellowing, with sporadic bursts of his signature shrieking. “The Eye” keeps things varied with strutting rhythms that have more in common with hard rock. “Living Dead” closes, reminding us that Hypocrisy is a seasoned band that's been honing its craft since 1990.
