Cut Them Where They Bleed

Cut Them Where They Bleed

On its third album, the Atlanta-based Tiger! Tiger! solidifies its brash brand of garage rock with kinetic ensemble playing and plenty of insolent attitude. The group (originally a spinoff from the surf-rocking Vendettas) keeps the spotlight on the lead vocals of Buffi Aguero, who carries herself with the acerbic swagger of a classic punk princess. The tunes here are lyrically smart (if sometimes obscure) and musically hard-driving, recalling the reckless energy of early new wave acts like X-Ray Spex and Human Switchboard. Careening excursions like “These Unlikely Skins,” “Circle the Drain,” and “The Law of Attrition” gain a trashy charm from Shane Pringle’s bashing guitar riffs and San Leyja’s reedy organ lines. Moodier numbers like the jazzy-tinged “Interlopers” and the European cabaret–styled “Gin with Sailors” offer some contrast to the hellbent tempos that dominate the album. The mood here ranges from manic to mocking, with Aguero delivering choice putdowns in “You Should Know by Now,” “Sugar in My Tank,” and similarly scathing tunes.
