All I Did Was Tell Them the Truth and They Thought It Was Hell

All I Did Was Tell Them the Truth and They Thought It Was Hell

Matt Slate’s first album as King of Spain—2008’s Entropy—was a hushed and seemingly personal thing, full of whispering instruments, with Slate’s vocals a bit underwhelming (perhaps undermixed). Since that release, Daniel Wainwright has joined Slate on bass and vocals, plus songwriting. The duo makes a strong outing on All I Did Was, 10 tracks of surefooted, crisp yet reverbed tunes that have a darkly enchanting feel. The duo’s vocals are strong and confident, with their tightly tracked harmonies and smart lyrics hitting the mark as effectively as the shimmering, Byrds-ian guitars, the muted rumble of distorted bass lines, or the whip of razor-sharp percussion. The guitars and vocals are barbed and bristly on the ominous “Perception,” and hazy and comforting on “Basement Fires.” The chattering guitar and urgent vocal recitation of “Motions” is quietly thrilling, while the soaring harmonies of “Green Eyes” are heavenly. King of Spain has well earned a place in Amerindie rock royalty, alongside Iron and Wine and Fleet Foxes. All hail the King.
