Ostro

Ostro

The Italian duo Lay Llamas' debut, Ostro, offers an idiosyncratic spin on space rock and psych rock that bridges the gap between pioneers like Pink Floyd and Hawkwind and modern purveyors like Pinkunoizu and Sun Araw. Partners Nicola Ginuta and Gioele Valenti avoid the self-conscious solemnity that often typifies bands in this genre by infusing their dreamy excursions with a playful spirit. The album’s compositions suggest vast interior environments, where placid landscapes are threatened by ominous shadows. Throbbing beats provide grounding for the billowing atmospherics in tracks like “Desert of Lost Souls,” “We Are You," and “Overmind.” Especially cinematic is “Archaic Revival,” a Martin Denny–like slice of cosmic exotica spiced with geothermal murmurs and birdlike trills. Ginuta and Valenti embroider each piece with fine webbings of gauzy synths without losing sight of the need for more physical textures. The grimy funk pulse of “Something Wrong” and the garage rock organ buzz of “Voices Call” take Lay Llamas down from the clouds into earthier planes.
