Groove with You

Groove with You

A collection of outtakes hastily assembled after Phyllis Hyman’s 1995 death, Groove with You wasn't sanctioned by the singer’s estate but nonetheless offers a valuable—and highly intimate—portrayal of her work. The nine songs are drawn from across Hyman’s 20-year recording career. The rough-and-tough funk tracks “Do Me” and “It’s Time to Go” are obviously drawn from the late '70s and show the typically elegant Hyman at her feistiest. While nowhere near as impeccable as “You Know How to Love Me”—Hyman’s signature 1979 hit—“I Can’t Live Without You” and “Leaving the Good Life Behind” are a pair of songs that show just how high she could soar, even with relatively generic disco tracks. The most compelling songs come from the early '90s, the last stage of Hyman’s career. “Hold Me” is so simple that it could be almost be a demo, but Hyman’s rich, unhurried vocals give the song depth. The same is true of “And That Would Be” and “Deep Inside of You,” which pair the sweetness of Hyman’s earliest work with the resigned wisdom she won after two decades in a ruthless business.
