UGK
Banned - EP

When Jive Records meddled with UGK’s major label debut Too Hard To Swallow and forced the group to excise several songs and samples, it was only the beginning of an artist-label relationship that would become increasingly sour in the years to come. Jive may have promised UGK more money and bigger exposure, but why would they sign a down-and-dirty Texas rap group if they didn’t expect that group to make down-and-dirty Texas rap music? In any event when Jive turned down several songs for Too Hard To Swallow, UGK simply took them to local Houston label Bigtyme Recordz, who were more than happy to air the gloriously nasty musings of these local heroes. Banned contains three songs, two of them paired with instrumental versions. “Intro” and “Muthaf**** Ain’t Mine” are raw distillations of insolent attitude, while “Pregnant P***y,” with a Pimp C beat that wobbles with lead-footed intoxication, pushes explicit lyrics so far past the point of common decency that one can’t help but cheer it on as a pie in the face of Tipper Gore and her PMRC.
