After striking a chord with their acclaimed 2003 debut Lovers—especially amongst critics in America and England—Perth ensemble The Sleepy Jackson soared to even loftier heights on this lush 2006 follow-up. Luke Steele’s songwriting wasn’t just directly influenced by 1960s touchstones, but the album’s ambitious arrangements set out to rival those masters. That means the lyrical themes of romance and transcendence are reliably burnished with gorgeous touches, from the George Harrison-style gossamer slide guitar on several songs to the Beatlesque chord progressions on “God Knows” and the elaborate harmonies evoking Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys throughout. (The band also covered John Lennon’s solo classic “(Just Like) Starting Over” as an album B-side.) A full orchestra and backup singers show up on more than one occasion, and whiffs of glam rock breeze through Steele’s bewitching guitar hooks and come-hither purr. This would turn out to be the final Sleepy Jackson album, since the side project Empire of the Sun took full flight in both chart and awards success with their 2008 debut Walking On a Dream. That act very much became Steele’s primary focus in the years to come, although he made time to release his first solo record in 2022.
