On the original version of Bitches Brew, Davis spliced together various takes from disparate sessions; here, the ensemble turns the psychedelic studio recordings into live performances. They turn up the backing beat to keep the mysterious urgency flowing on “Miles Runs the Voodoo Down” and the title track, while adding to the album’s dark, surreal atmosphere with noise and improvisations on “Sanctuary” and “It’s About That Time.” The results make for startling, essential additions to one of the trumpeter’s most innovative periods.
