On his debut solo album, whose Chinese title means “Us”, Xiao Zhan explores the emotions that define the self—and the shared experiences that join individuals together. Bookended by cinematic instrumentals, the LP’s ten tracks tell stories that expose modern-day anxieties and vulnerabilities. Slower songs feature subtle arrangements and understated orchestration to highlight the mature texture of the artist’s emotive voice, while the uplifting rock ballad “Life of Us” and inspirational pop anthem “Beacon” are showcases for his confident energy. A screen superstar he may be, but the feelings Xiao conveys are unpretentious, resonant and reassuring.
