Live at Cain's Ballroom

Wyatt Flores’ 2024 album Welcome to the Plains gives a great sense of the young artist’s vitality. Whether singing about the complex relationship he has with his home state of Oklahoma or confronting his own mortality, Flores performs his original songs with his whole chest, revealing a bone-deep commitment to his craft that’s evident both in his impassioned vocals and his willingness to dig into tough topics. This live outing from Flores gives a greater sense of the 23-year-old Americana singer-songwriter’s dynamism, as he commands the stage of one of his home state’s most famous venues with an easy, joyful confidence. It also captures the skill and chemistry of his band, who Flores says really come to life in a live setting. “Our entire band, just from what you hear on the record to what we do live, it’s so different,” he tells Apple Music. “And the little things that we add into [our live shows], it’s magic.” The 18-song set opens with Welcome to the Plains’ title track, a dark and rollicking journey into Oklahoma’s bloody history made all the more urgent by Flores’ aching vocal and his band’s knack for letting tension build. The energy continues to swell with “Life Lessons,” the title track of a 2023 EP from Flores that is clearly a fan favorite—the crowd’s spirited sing-along almost drowns him out at the chorus. Other highlights include the groovy tearjerker “I Believe in God,” on which Flores sings so hard, you have to wonder if it hurts, and “Please Don’t Go,” a 2022 song that helped Flores find his audience.
