The Spanish classical guitar-influenced opening to “Alesund”—one of Mark Kozelek’s most sublimely lyrical performances—sets the perfect tone for Admiral Fell Promises, an album of incredible vision built on his relationship with his acoustic nylon-string guitar. Tracks like “Half Moon Bay” and “Third and Seneca” are dazzling journeys via winding guitar lines and vivid imagery that, together, recall some of Kozelek’s most heartbreaking tableaux. “Bay of Skulls” is a satisfying album closer full of the bucolic moments that only he can deliver.
