Mark Kozelek’s fifth album as Sun Kil Moon saw the singer discovering the beauty of nylon-string guitar, which is heard throughout. A visionary musician, Kozelek set out to record this sprawling LP mostly alone and without demos, which is why the balanced playing and shimmering interludes of tracks like “Elaine” are so impressive. The brilliant melodies of “The Moderately Talented Yet Attractive Young Woman…” and “Sunshine In Chicago” are some of his most buoyant and uplifting, standing out from a body of decidedly melancholic work.
