Cerebral Caustic

With Mark E. Smith's ex-wife Brix rejoining the group, the Fall's pop element immediately becomes more pronounced. "Feeling Numb" has a melody so strong it turns the Fall into a proper pop group and the call and response vocals of "Don't Call Me Darling" are like walking into a lover's spat. The album is guitarist Craig Scanlon's and keyboardist/ programmer Dave Bush's last album with the group. Scanlon defined the band's riff arsenal and Bush had brought the group into a new era that was slightly techno and gave them a punchier rhythm section. It's a worthy swansong. While the melodies are strong, the guitars and keyboards are dense and forceful, creating an urgency to "Life Just Bounces," "The Joke" and "One Day." The Frank Zappa cover "I'm Not Satisfied" flows like a garage rock number. "Bonkers in Phoenix" is, well, bonkers, a music concrete piece that features Brix's manipulated vocals, random keyboard touches and atmospheric noises. This edition of the album includes a Christmas-themed John Peel session ("Hark The Herald Angels Sing" as imagined by Smith), early mixes and alternate mixes of the album.
