You never quite know what you’re going to get from a FaltyDL release. Where some electronic musicians adopt a new alias for every stylistic detour, Brooklyn’s Drew Lustman has piloted his principal moniker through every kind of water and weather, from choppy breakbeats to deep, tranquil house. Like 2018’s A Taste of Acid EP, If All the People Took Acid rarely invokes the sound of acid directly; instead, it’s a broad-strokes throwback to the manic energy of early-'90s dance music, harnessing snarling breakbeats (“Flesh of Acid”), twitchy EBM (“Scream Acid”), and, on the opener, flayed 909 hi-hats and the detuned leads of Aphex Twin at his most mental. Only on Octo Octa’s remix do squirrelly 303s come into play; they’re fittingly mind-melting.
