It’s rare for a comedy duo to obtain a rock-star level of superstardom, but Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, a.k.a. Flight of the Conchords, aren’t your average comedians. The pair may have called themselves the “almost award-winning fourth-most-popular folk duo in New Zealand” during their brilliant, short-lived TV series, which ran between 2007 and 2009, but in reality, they’re Grammy-winning cult heroes who’ve been sorely missed. Nearly a decade after their series ended, FOTC reunited for a sold-out tour in 2018 that included dates at London’s Eventim Apollo, where this live album was recorded, along with an HBO special. Right off the bat, they joke about being a little older than the “sexy man-boys that you saw 10 years ago on the TV”—but nothing else has aged about their ridiculous skits and beloved songs. Alongside longtime favorites from the show’s best episodes—“Inner City Pressure,” “Mutha’uckas,” “Bowie,” and “The Most Beautiful Girl (In the Room)”—new songs such as “Father and Son” and “Iain and Deanna” prove that, if anything, their rapport, humor, and songwriting skills have become even more refined and hilarious with age.
