Though The House of Love never gained the mass audience it deserved in the U.S., it did earn a decent-sized U.K. fan base. These recordings—made between 1990 and 1992, after seminal guitarist Terry Bickers had left the group—capture a band still playing at the top of its game. Kicking off with the impressive would-be-anthem "I Don't Know Why I Love You" and blazing through favorites such as "Beatles and Stones," "Never," "Shine On," "Christine," and later tunes like "You Crush Me," "Cruel," and "High in Your Face," Live at the BBC is arguably the best way to experience the band's career. Although Guy Chadwick and Co. were an impressive studio group, The House of Love came together with extra urgency in the live format. There's a vastness of sound throughout, turning "The Girl with the Loneliest Eyes" into an atmospheric aria worthy of a large arena. Once dubbed "the U2 that never were" by the British press, The House of Love had the goods all along.
