A savvy summary of his MCA years in the ’80s, Only Survivor shows Bobby Womack’s enduring strengths as a performer of his own and other writers’ songs. He’s at his smoothest on Sam Cooke’s “That’s Where It’s At” and his most surprising on a slamming take on “Living in a Box” by the eponymous British funk-pop act. Womack conveys his strongest longings in “I Wish He Didn’t Trust Me So Much,” a self-penned melodrama about a man’s inconvenient desire for someone else’s wife.
