The Minutes

The Minutes

Though Alison Moyet came to national attention as half of the synth-pop duo Yazoo (a.k.a. Yaz), she hasn't released a formidable electronic-based studio album since the '80s. The Minutes, her first new album in six years, was brought to fruition with producer Guy Sigsworth, who made his mark on records by Madonna, Björk, and Britney Spears. Together, they have an incredible amount of fun. The adventurous rhythms and dubstep challenges of "Changeling" create an excitement that's nicely balanced by the more moderate (but still aggressive) arrangements of "When I Was Your Girl," where Moyet sounds like the victorious torch singer fans dreamed she could be. But what fans love most is what she has to say, and songs like "Remind Yourself" and "A Place to Stay" speak from Moyet's heart in ways that few singers ever accomplish. "Filigree"—here in a standard version and an expansive and rocking West Coast Mix—suggests a bit of what Yaz could've been in the year 2013.
