Upon signing with the arty Nonesuch label, k.d. lang again reinvented herself. This time neither country-punk queen or club-floor diva, she instead put together a lush, quiet album of tunes from her native Canada. Aside from one co-written original-the giddy, wordy love song "Simple,"-lang borrows from the likes of Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Bruce Cockburn, and Jane Siberry - as often taking on less well-known numbers as big draws such as Young's "After the Gold Rush" and "Helpless." Elegance has never been a problem for lang, but here she fully embraces it with some of the most generous, true singing of her career.
