Harpsichordist Egarr investigates the elegant stylized dances of Bach. Questions of performance practice haunt musicians looking to take up the timeless keyboard works of J.S. Bach. Though written for the harpsichord, the six French Suites are usually performed on the piano; however, in a provocative and refreshing decision, Egarr takes up these dance suites on the former. The Gigue of the fifth suite, a lively dance movement, rings with the richness of the German composer’s mind-blowing counterpoint, and the Sarabande of the fourth suite is steeped in the elegance of the 18th-century triple-meter dance, its contemplative tempo and alluring melody providing the perfect balance for harpsichord performance.
