Decades before the United States normalised relations with the island of Cuba, Buena Vista Social Club acted as musical ambassadors between the two nations. It’s one of world music’s greatest crossover stories, wherein a clutch of nearly forgotten Cuban masters—including crooner Ibrahim Ferrer, pianist Rubén González and guitarist/vocalist Compay Segundo—brought the house down at Carnegie Hall. This live album remains the all-star group’s crowning achievement, capturing the ensemble in joyous form, adding bravado and fire to songs like “El Cuarto de Tula” and “Candela”.
